Line and Color

Thankful as I am for children’s play equipment I find myself asking, where did it come from?  Why is it such gaudy colors?  Is it, as Elizabeth Peabody said, “the gospel for children” to come to them in their size and give them a sense of the power of their own bodies?  Is it an architecture of adult fantasy?  Is it educational or a distraction?  What is the purpose of play?  What is truly pleasurable play?
